Brussels Fiscality came into being on 1 January 2012 as a result of various State reforms that broadened the competences and autonomy of the regions.
On 1 January 2017, Brussels Fiscality became a public service in its own right in order to implement the 2016-2017 tax reform, transfer taxes to the regions and lead new innovative projects.
Brussels Fiscality's competences have expanded several times over the last few years.
- 1 February 2017: creation of the tax on tourist accommodation establishments (hotel, campsite, B&B, etc.).
- 1 January 2018: participation in implementing the Brussels Low Emission Zone (LEZ) with other administrations. Brussels Fiscality is responsible for processing warnings and fines.
- 2018: takeover of property tax management.
- August 2019: launch of the MyTax digital platform, making it easier for taxpayers to manage their tax procedures.
- 1 January 2020: takeover of road taxes management, previously managed by the FPS Finance.
- 2023: creation of the tax on taxi service booking intermediaries.
In the years to come, new competences should be transferred to Brussels Fiscality, in particular gambling duties and registration duties related to the purchase of real estate.
